Ask an operator what share of bookings is direct and you usually get a feeling, not a figure. The data exists — it is just split across a booking engine, GA4 and three platform dashboards that do not talk to each other.
The minimum viable setup
- Conversion tracking on the booking confirmation, wired to your engine — FareHarbor, Peek, Rezdy and the rest all support it, few operators enable it.
- UTM discipline on every link you control: Google profile, Instagram bio, email campaigns, concierge QR codes.
- A monthly one-page reconciliation: bookings by source from the engine, sessions by channel from GA4, payouts by platform. Thirty minutes, once a month.
The numbers that matter
- Direct share of total bookings, trending monthly
- Revenue per booking, direct vs OTA — direct usually wins by the commission margin
- Cost per direct booking, all-in — ads, software, processing
You cannot mend a net you cannot see.
