Rate Parity for Tour Operators, Explained Without the Hotel Jargon

Can you undercut the OTAs on your own site? What the agreements actually say, and the levers that stay legal.

Hotel marketers argue about rate parity constantly. Operators inherit the same question with less clarity: can you sell your own tour cheaper on your own site than on Viator?

What the agreements generally say

Platform terms commonly expect the rates you list with them to match your public rates — read your own agreement, because terms differ and change. What they cannot reach is everything that is not a public rate.

The levers that stay clean

  • Value adds: same price direct, but photos included, priority seating, flexible rescheduling.
  • Private offers: returning-guest emails and quote-based group pricing are not public rates.
  • Product splits: a direct-only tour time, duration or variant the platforms simply do not carry.
  • Bundles: tour plus transfer or photo package, priced as one — incomparable by design.

Parity binds the sticker price. It does not bind the offer.

Structure the direct offer so it wins without triggering a parity dispute — that is conversion work, and it is most of what the booking funnel build is.
